One of the biggest challenges for consumers of entertainment today is the constantly growing options of entertainment platforms each with their own exclusive, ever-expanding catalog of content. From the user’s standpoint it is not only expensive, but also increasingly challenging to search for and decide what to watch, listen to, or read.

Our team set out to study consumer behavior to understand how they select content, what factors influence their decision-making process and how the myriad of options available affects their experience of entertainment content.

Our ultimate goal is to develop a solution that would hopefully alleviate users’ frustrations and improve their digital entertainment experience.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

How might we streamline the experience of choosing and discovering content across multiple platforms to alleviate decision fatigue?

In today’s age, consumers are bombarded with content throughout a variety of apps.

As a result, Quentin finds it tedious and time consuming to sift through content across multiple apps.

Goal

PROBLEM SPACE

When consuming entertainment content, users face challenges and decision-fatigue related to irrelevant recommendations, feeling frustrated when they can’t find anything to watch and spending too much time searching for what to watch between different services.

GOALS / UX METHODS

We conducted interviews with five users to gain insight into the context, choices and frustrations when it came to engaging with entertainment content. Our research revealed four main themes:

FEATURE PRIORITIZATION MATRIX

Our team collaboratively completed the MuShCoWo Map. We began with reusing the same sticky notes we used for the matrix, and relocating them to the MuShCoWo Map. This process allowed us to work fluidly from one design phase to the next. By sticking them up on a whiteboard and organizing where each feature idea should be on the map we were able to further prioritize our features. After white boarding together, we then documented the exercise through photos and through digital recreation.

PHASE I

Sketching

LO-FI

In the design phase, we leveraged our data collection on feature prioritization matrices to integrate them into our new concepts. Following this, we carefully selected the color palette for our streaming services app. This involved a dynamic process of brainstorming, sketching, and refining designs through critique and feedback. The goal was to ensure a cohesive design direction for the app.

PHASE II

MID-FI PROTOTYPE

Testing Ideas Before Final Design

Utilizing design principles and insights gleaned from our research, in conjunction with our design studio collaborations, we developed wireframes and a mid-fidelity prototype. This approach allowed us to visualize and test our design concepts efficiently, minimizing both time and cost. Through these tests, we gained valuable insights into user interactions with our designs, informing our final design decisions.

PHASE III

HI-FI PROTOTYPE

We conducted multiple rounds of usability testing and developed a high-fidelity prototype to showcase the platform's final look. This process enabled us to make necessary adjustments before the launch. Link to Figma Prototype
